::: On Refusing to Accept Death :::

If we, Mankind, are God’s favorites
Why does he permit, even revel, in our Death?
Why are flags folded, coffins closed,
Appropriate words murmured by religious men and women
Expecting a gratuity for their service?

Ordinary people, you and I and Mrs. Anderson
Down the street
Refuse to use the word “inevitability”
In determining our lives.
Giving up, losing hope, shrugging our shoulders
Expecting a trip to some heaven
Is the coward’s solution.
