::: Unexpected Jam :::

Strolling by the bandshell stage
a white man stops to hear
Familiar sounds from days of rage
a black man plays so clear
Hammering down on the skins of beasts
hands sweat red and white
Hammering sound with an African beat
elbows and arms in flight
The white man sits amidst percussion
only eye contact they need
The white man starts his own session
following the black man’s lead
Curious eyes meander near
The summer day has some sound
Curious faces smile and cheer
Many gather round
Black man and white man play with heart
In Central Park’s beauty and pride
Black man and white man worlds apart
Find music their binding stride
Lost in the high of rolling thunder
Each man close their eyes
Pounding each soul from days asunder
Bringing the sound to a rise
And in an instant like brothers afar
The end comes fast and clean
As adrenaline hides how startled they are
With a crowd of a hundred unseen
