::: Soft Black Road :::

When the asphalt wandered off and melted into itself
The danger eluded such powers to be
Such Sandmen  working on so many other
jobs on their list that month
For at The Crossroads  of the World
sinister in waiting
The pothole collected cans and the like
Taxi cabs slowed to save an axle
While Bridge and Tunnel-ites bounced through
like out of place cumbersome elephants afoot
Then along came the actor
embedded in his script
committed to memory for that night's opening
Along he came with The Great White Way
Behind him, in front of him, inside him
And with red turning to green
he began his dash
like so many others stuck in-between
And in an instant
turned to searing gasps
of an ankle turned skyward in the hole
An instant turned to motion slowed
as the buildings tumbled down above him
And in the middle of The Square
with vehicles potential hate
the actor cried and crawled to the curb
For that night would prevail
way off Broadway
with it's lead hopping cross the stage
All in an instant
from the melted black sea
still waiting to bite
again
