Struggle

The bitter-sweet entity that has beleaguered the African race for far too long
A testament to the course of their lives from start to finish and beginning to end
Monumental strife released in the river of blood that has fed this nation for far too long
Even I can smell the rancid and coppery scent of blood that has dried up and yet still lingers
The deluge has been reduced to the simplistic rhythm of drip, drip, drip
But who will claim responsibility for the blood on their hands?

Pain

The long-lasting essence that suffuses the soul and is an all too familiar ally to us
Deep seated in our sub-conscious are the ever-lasting memories of the atrocities committed against us
How do you forget it? Ignore it? Surpass it?

Too often we revel in it. Cling to it. Shroud ourselves with it.
Using it to justify our petty crimes and indifferent lives
Afraid to let it go,
Because then what excuse can we offer for our mediocrity?
