::: Imaginary People :::

In life’s competition for worldly goods
Which include affection and approval
A worthy though transparent foe
Are the crowds of imaginary people.

Their stunning virtues untouched by vice
(Except for vice found pleasing.)
Are assembled with such dexterous love
That God’s diligence may be questioned.

They keep themselves from blame
Through a dark practice of trigonometry
It is never they at fault
But their low material tangents.

Indeed, who can compete with ones reared
In a pure land of hopes and dreams
And who live only to please the hearts and minds
Of the fountains from which they spring.
