spoke about the young white lifeguard at the pool
who yelled out to her
as she emerged from the
chlorinated water on a wobbly metal ladder

“I’m voting for Obama! Let’s do this!”

His voice echoed off the high white tiled ceiling
prompting memory

sitting next to a white boy from Connecticut

As they listened to epithets
fifty cops waiting outside
fifty cops
fifty cops

her epidermis
obligation to vote
for him

“Let’s do this!”

Ignorant assumption
or
racial solidarity

She slips her feet into yellow flip flops
wraps the rough white towel modestly around her midsection
thinking
