Chauncie Benjamin

I am a fifty six year old native of Florida. I have written poetry since 1986. My first poem was written at the bedside of my dying grandmother, on March 23, 1986. My style of poetry is "Ode", because my poems have a rhyming pattern; and they deal with special subject matter. Some of my poems are "Ballad", because of the story they tell. I have been inspired by such poets as, Langston Hughes, who wrote poetry in the mid 1900s, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, Hugh Prather, Oriah Mountain Dreamer, and many other talented poets. My poems depict my life's story , and the life of those I love. Since my birth, I have been on a journey. I have traveled many miles. Some roads have been smooth: some roads rough. I started my journey with God. I will end my journey with God. Be as enlightened, comforted and rewarded in reading my poetry; as I have been in writing it.

::: Granny's Love :::

For many years I remember, my granny's love and care.
Her goodness, her kindness, her smile beyond compare.
A favorite of my granny's was her many mulberry trees.
Her cookies, cakes and pies, she baked them all with ease.
She ran me away from the mulberry tree for fear of getting sick.
But back up the mulberry tree I went and picked, picked and picked.
She put me in time out because you know all granny's do.
Somehow I forgot those times, because her love kept shining through.
Her wood stove she loved so dear, she refused to throw away.
But kept me nourished and satisfied, with meals day after day.
It made no difference what she cooked, it always turned out good.
Though many times I refused to eat as often as I should.
I well remember at her home, my granny watched me there.
While mom and dad were out of town, I stayed in granny's care.
It seems as though it took all night to climb in her bed.
Because granny loved to sleep high when time came to lay her head.
For ninety years the lord has blessed the life of granny dear.
And though he's called her far away, her love is always near.
