::: Samurai 7 :::

By ~ Apollo

If you haven't, you need to go check out the international classic Seven Samurai. It is one of the greatest movies of all time and possibly the greatest movie to ever come out of Japan. The anime Samurai 7, pays homage to this classic and recreates the story in a futuristic setting with a few tweaks to the plot. The premise is basically the same as seven samurai come together to fight, all the while going through their own personal confrontations with themselves and each other.

The story is loosely based on the original but obviously their are some tweaks as the setting is completely different. The story has a great mix of humor and seriousness. The characters themselves are very memorable and you will find yourself picking a favorite. Ultimately, there is not much to dislike about the samurai and the layers of their various relationships with each other are very compelling. It is interesting to note the differences between the anime and the classic. The differences do not detract but rather enhance the story by keeping it fresh and putting a new spin on it. Having experienced the classic first makes the anime something to truly savor. The plot progresses at a reasonable rate, but fans will be much more interested in the development of the seven samurai themselves. This is one of the parts where the show is really strong so I hope that will assuage those fans who think this is a senseless hack n' slash marathon.

The visuals in this anime are very unique and the futuristic, which brings the setting to life. You really get the feel that you are in a new and complex world with tons of stuff happening. The fighting is very sweet and the characters are done with a fair amount of detail. The samurai look especially unique in their own ways and that helps to distinguish their personalities. All in all, the show is better than average with regard to the graphics.

Samurai 7 has a different feel than the classic that it is based on, yet its familiar at the same time. The fighting is awesome, the story is based off one of the greatest films of all time, and the new spin that has been put on it makes the show even better. This anime is definitely worth your time.
