::: Full Metal Alchemist :::
By ~ Apollo
Full Metal Alchemist is the story of brothers Edward and Alfonse Elrich. Their quest is to revive their deceased mother using the power of alchemy. In this world, alchemy works almost like magic. The brothers use their powers to transmute objects for the benefit of mankind. The series is very deep not just because of the intense action and story, but with the lessons that it teaches. Among these lessons are trust, friendship, brotherhood, and pushing the limits of what humanity is capable of. It also begs the question of what exactly is the limit if any for human achievement and whether or not it is okay to play god.
The visuals of this series are pretty impressive at times. It is a very modern series in terms of visuals and the action is sure to deliver. At first glance this looks like it might even be a child show. Before I actually watched the entire series, which is about fifty episodes, I wrote this off as another childish anime series. I cannot tell you how wrong I was. The opening scenes had me hooked from the get go and I immediately realized that I was in for something special. There is plenty of fighting, a good amount of blood, and a fair amount of death. Trust me its sweet if you give it a chance.
The plot for this anime was awesome. There are some pretty graphic moments I must admit, as well as some things that will make you realize just how sadistic and/or disturbed people can be. One of the episode's entitled "The Chimera's Cry" made me take a break for a day or so. It involves a desperate man who ends up sacrificing very dear loved ones to further his research and to save his job. This series is not for the light of heart and really makes you think about yourself and the decisions you would have made if you were switched with some of the characters. Speaking of which, the characters are very memorable. You are introduced to many people who are either haunted by their past or the dark things that humanity is capable of given enough power. One of the series greatest strengths is that it does not rely on action too much or the plot. The series balances both together really well.
This series should be good for anyone 14 and up I'd say. It’s got some kick ass action, a very mature story line, and it also has some humorous moments as well. Its got a very nice coming of age feeling to it and its a series that most if not all anime fans should be able to appreciate. Give this show a true shot. Trust me, you won't be sorry.
