::: Death Note :::

By ~ Apollo

This is suspenseful anime at its best. This is by no means an action series, but its great none the less. If you are looking for an anime that goes in a bit of a different direction then give Death Note a try. It will have you hooked until the final episode if you give it a chance.

The story is interesting because our protagonist is also the antagonist. Yagami Light is a top student who is looking for a little more out of life. He gets what he wants when he discovers a mysterious book called a death note. It turns out that is what dropped by a bored Death God named Ryuk, who is bound to Light as long as he chooses to use it the book. Whoever's name is written in the death note will die in whatever way you specify. In order to kill someone you must know what they look like and you must know their name so you can write it in the book. The death note's power combined with Yagami Light's brilliance makes him the most dangerous killer on the planet. Light believes that he is doing the world a favor, but we see over time that he is a little too self-righteous and that he desires to be the ultimate judge of all things. It all goes well until the top detective in the world decides to get involved. His name is L and he will test Light in an intellectual thriller that may very well be unrivaled in any other anime. It is a race between Light and L to discover each other's identities. The winner will sentence the other to death in that name of what that person calls "justice".

This series has an exquisite artistic style that really brings the story, characters, and emotion to life. It’s very nice to look at and it combines well with the story to make the overall quality brilliant. The music also helps set the mood. It is very appropriate and really helps you get into the intensity and feeling of each scene.

Death Note is for anyone who likes thrillers. It is pretty exciting, even for an action fan like myself. It asks some important questions about loyalty and justice. Action fans please give this show a chance. Its a great opportunity to expand your horizons in anime.

I must admit. It took me a year of knowing about Death Note to decide to finally sit down and watch it. My fears were that it would be another waste that the pre-teen Narutards would rave about. After attending a local anime convention and seing nearly a million Ls walking around I decided to investigate what all the fuss was about. The first episode pulled me in from the first scene. I don't understand how L can be everyone's favorite character when Light is so much more deep and fascinating. There are no dead ends in the plot and the story moves at a pace that keeps you hooked but not confused. I am defiantly a fan now and want to tell every old anime fan to not be afraid to watch it just because it is popular to the masses.
