::: Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion :::

By ~ Apollo

It seems that these days there is a lot of anime being made out there. A lot of the anime today has some impressive visuals, but doesn't have the story to back it up. Code Geass is not one of those new school animes with impressive visuals but a lacking story. It has the total package. Teenager Lelouch Lamperouge may be one of the most intriguing characters ever created. The show is very engaging and is one to savor intellectually and visually.

Lelouch Lamperouge appears to us as nothing more than a regular high school student in Area 11. Area 11 is the new name for Japan. Japan and a horde of other countries are now under control of the Holy Brittanian Empire. However, there is more to Lelouch than meets the eye. He is actually one of the sons of the Emperor. His mother was betrayed and murdered when Lelouch was very young. His father did nothing about it. Lelouch and his blind sister were sent to live in Area 11. Years later his life is simple until he encounters a mysterious woman named C.C. This woman grants him the power of Geass. This power allows him to give an order to anyone. Once he makes the order, the person is put into a trance and automatically follows the order given. The only catch is that he can only use it once on a person, so he must be careful who he uses it on and where he uses it. With this power, Lelouch decides to advance his secret ambition of getting revenge and crushing the Brittanian empire. His ultimate goal is to create a world that is suitable for his blind sister Nunally to live in.

This show's visuals are very impressive. The battles in the mechs are freakin' sweet. What's more impressive is the tactical movements that are shown. Tactics play a big part in the battles and the effects of these tactics are displayed very well. The art style in general is nice. It looks very new school but it still has a soul. It doesn't even come close to having the new school mass produced feel that many animes sadly have these days. The expression on the character's faces are real and show true emotion. Not much more you can ask for in this department.

The story is nothing short of brilliant. Lelouch is really hard to describe. He seems to almost be in the right in terms of his quest for revenge on Brittania. He evens seems noble as stage one of his plan involves leading the Japanese citizens to independence. Lelouch is a genius and is usually three or four steps ahead of his opponents. His brilliance will stun fans at times and it is amazing how effective he is. Though amazing, his effectiveness and brilliance is also believable. The only problem is that some of his methods are less than respectable. Besides Nunally, Lelouch does not seem to care about anyone else. In the end, everyone else seems expendable. This any means necessary attitude may be the reason that all fans cannot get behind him. Those in favor of change from within will like Kurarugi Suzaku, who is Lelouches childhood best friend turned enemy. Whichever way you choose, there is a lot to offer for fans of this series.

This show goes hard and makes no apologies for it. It is very violent and has many teases. In fact, almost every episode leaves you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. I highly recommend this anime because it has a great story, plot twists, memorable characters, great fight sequences, and much more. I was blown away by this series. Give it five or six episodes and you will push all the way through to season 2.
